One Beer Belly, Please.

14 Jun

I have made the decision to acquire a beer gut.

This decision was not come by lightly. I am supposed to be doing P90X this season, but with starting a new business, selling all my worldly possessions, and preparing for a move across the continent, devoting an hour or two every day to my fitness hasn’t been working out.

Plus, there’s my ankle.

Twelve weeks, and it’s still not completely healed. I can do most things, but I can’t hit full stride in a run, which means no parkour.

Soon, I will be living in Costa Rica, doing yoga all the time in the sunshine.

Right now, I live in Portland, one of the microbrewery meccas of the world.

I plan on indulging in my love of beer for the next 48 days, six pack be damned! (more…)

Don’t Gimme Shelter

The mindset of Western and European people is fundamentally influenced by our crappy weather.

When I want to take my kids out of doors, we have to hunt for a large list of essential clothing:
  • Coats
  • Shoes
  • Socks
  • Baby Legs (but my 5 year old insists we call them “leggings,” and if I call them “Baby Legs” we have to go find ANOTHER pair)
  • Sweaters
  • Hats
  • Scarves
  • Gloves
Amidst the 30-minute search for all of these pieces, I have learned a few interesting things. (more…)

An Ode to Timothy Hutton

14 Feb

Dear Timothy Hutton,

I loved your work in Playing God. It opened my eyes to the secret of villainy: the bad guy is the richest part to play in the dramatic arts.

You have forgotten more about acting than I have ever learned. (Assuming, of course, that your memory excretion faculty is still in working order, and you can safely discharge what you no longer need.)

I have been an ardent fan of Leverage for three years. Not exclusively because of your involvement in it, but also of my city’s involvement in it.

Somewhere, in the City of Roses, you have a favorite hangout. And in that favorite hangout, you have a favorite table, and a favorite drink.

I would like to buy you a drink at that table, and spend a half hour delighting in the answers to certain questions that enthusiastic young actors like to pose: namely,

  • how do you experience your character?
  • what makes your favorite characters tic?
  • how have you landed your favorite roles?
  • if you could start your career over again, what would you do differently?

I’d love to ask you these questions in person, and I would, in all likelihood, use your answers to navigate my future career.

Name the place, and the time. A half hour out of your evening would be one of the milestones of my life.
